We designed the EMA study to be nested within the Pain Interference Longitudinal Survey study. This allowed us to recruit participants from the population-based study and perform combined analyses of the EMA and survey data. Specifically, we recruited 149 individuals who returned a baseline survey in Study 1. We collected Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates from 128 participants. The GPS data was discarded for first 20 participants due to a program malfunction and one EMA participant opted out of the GPS data collection portion. Of the EMA participants, 99 were between the ages of 18 and 65 years, and 28 were between the ages of 65 and 75. During the EMA study recruitment, we informed participants that they would receive a $50 cash incentive in exchange for their participation. Demographic characteristics for the EMA sample are included in Table 1.
